PROGRAM LENGTHS
We offer programs which range in length from two weeks to an entire academic year. Which one is best for your needs? When planning, keep in mind that some programs require coursework or meetings before and/or after the program.
We suggest going into your program search with an open mind. Keep in mind that the academic opportunity that may be best for you might be a longer or shorter program than you were thinking about or may only offered during certain times of the year.
Semester Programs (Fall, Spring, or Full-Year):
- You must be enrolled as a full-time student while abroad for a semester program, i.e. at least 12 semester credits (or the equivalent), regardless of program type.
- For Panther Programs, these term lengths typically line up with the Pitt academic calendar, and last as long as the academic semester (15 weeks).
- Fall and Spring breaks may or may not be recognized depending on the program.
- Partner, Exchange, and Pitt-Recognized Programs will follow your host institution’s academic calendar. This may mean a start or end date that differs from Pitt’s start/end date and may differ by as much as 2 months.
- Note that holidays and spring or fall breaks will be at the discretion of the host institution and may not align with Pitt’s calendar.
- In most cases, your financial aid package can be applied to your semester program. Talk to Tim Bush in the Office of Admissions and Financial Aid for more information.
Maymester Programs
- These programs usually run for the month of May; programs offered during this time may range from 3-6 credits.
- These programs are usually focused on a niche topic or field of study, like “Revolutions and Rebellions in Cuba” or “ANOTHER PROGRAM.”
Summer Programs
- Study Abroad programs listed as “Summer programs” are offered between the months of May and August. These also range in duration from two weeks to the full three months of the summer break (May, June, July, August).
- Pitt Study Abroad offers the most program options over the summer.
- Summer programs typically range in credits offered from 6 credits in a 4-week program, to 12 credits in an 8-week program. Each program will have more information about the academics on its website.
Application Timeline
How long it takes to review applications by program type.
The post-acceptance process is going to be like getting shot out of a canon. There’s a lot to do.
Some programs may require interviews or a second application.
